What’s Google Buzz?

Google released it’s own brand of social networking this week.  Gmail users were offered the opportunity to participate in Google “Buzz”, a networking platform that is integrated into Gmail, Google’s branded email service.

How it works:

Google automatically detects and reccomends forming connections with those in your inbox which have signed up for the service already (Similar to other social networking sites), at this point only Gmail users.   Once you have signed up and picked who you wish to follow, you can begin to post status updates which are shared with those in your network, or everyone who searches you out, depending on your chosen preference.  Much like Facebook and others, email notifications are sent when anyone responds to your post, which is nicely integrated into the existing Gmail interface.

Will it Catch on?

Google hasn’t had too many failed attempts at internet endeavors, and chances are this wont be one of them.  Even as I posed this very question to Buzz status update field, I instantly gained responses which sparked a discussion about the topic, all the while sucking me in to the process and answering the question.  Whether or not it will rival or surpass such established powerhouses as Facebook and Myspace remains to be seen.  Based on its current incarnation, my guess is not anytime soon, but never say never.

Marketing Applications?

Just like Facebook fan pages and Twitter accounts, soon your customers will be able to add you to their list of people followed on Google Buzz.  Don’t be surprised if the Google moniker appears next to the standard social networking buttons in the very near future.  Check back with BeVisible to stay on top of the latest in Web Marketing and Development.
